I've changed my name but the former name isn't "maiden". Ditto relationship status - none of the options work...guess I'm in trouble again! Not recognizing many names, but my involvement was in the year before we opened, and I was there for the first year only. Embrace the awkward: if you knew me then you probably remember the name "Roger Reid". Most of my adult life I simply used "rl" as a non-binary first name. Then Little Mermaid came out and people started calling me "Ariel". Ick. My legal name is Rivke (RIV-kah) Lela Reid; I consider my former name a "dead-name" and appreciate the courtesy of not using it. That said, I do not snap if someone gets my name or gender wrong. This may also help explain why when I signed up for the Women's History course led by Kyra, and she commented "oh good, we can get a man's point of view", I told her I wasn't much good at "speaking for men". As of 2024 I am in rural Western Mass right outside Amherst (only the "h" is silent) and Northampton, as one of the safest places for those of us who don't live up to gender expectations. Plus I can always find cows and goats to talk to - they're pretty non-judgemental. Usually. |
